I'm trying to re-enable USB Autoplay in a secure way, by installing a program on each of the computers that I use so that I can run my launcher ( in this case) whenever I plug in my specific USB drive. The tool that I'm using to enable this -needs the serial number of the USB drive that I am using. I can't figure out where to find this in Windows. Ideally I would not need to install and run a separate program to do this (seemingly) simple task.
Since this is a pretty easy question, bonus points if you also tell me how to discover it in Linux as well. What steps do I need to take to retrieve a USB Drive's serial number? UPDATE: Just incase people come here looking for the answer for AutoRunGuard, I discovered that they don't want the USB device serial number, but the volume serial number. The drive serial can be found by going into the command line, navigating to the drive, and executing dir. The volume serial number is found in the top two lines - use it without the dash. Use the freeware: USBDeview is a small utility that lists all USB devices that currently connected to your computer, as well as all USB devices that you previously used.
For each USB device, exteneded information is displayed: Device name/description, device type, serial number (for mass storage devices), the date/time that device was added, VendorID, ProductID, and more. USBDeview also allows you to uninstall USB devices that you previously used, and disconnect USB devices that are currently connected to your computer.
You can also use USBDeview on a remote computer, as long as you login to that computer with admin user.
Do they even have them? I purchased two 2gb Extreme III CF cards from B&H and they don't appear to have serial numbers on them at all. Does anyone know where the serial numbers for the Ultra II SD cardswould be located? Subject efective Sandisk 2gb Ultra II Secure Digital Card I ordered a new Ultra II SD card from an on-line retailer for my Canon EOS-1D Mark II N DSLR. The camera has a high speed frame rate of 8.5fps (frames per second). When shooting in this mode I kept getting an error message on my camera and the images werent being recorded. I returned the card to the retailer for a replacement card, which was promptly sent to me. At first every thing seemed fine with the new card. I then began to experience the error message on my camera whether I was shooting at a high burst frame rate or single shot mode.
I can only get a few images on the card before it ceases to work and stops recording images. All I want is a replacement card that works so I can at least get my moneys worth. Ive used and trusted Sandisk products for quite some time, so I hope that this is just a freak occurance. I cant believe Id get two bad cards back to back. I currently use two 2gb Extreme III CFcards, two 1gb Extreme III CF cards and your CF card reader. However, I was forced to buy an alternative brand SD card for use in my professional DSLR.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this issue has brought you. Your memory card might have been corrupted. Please try to format the card on your camera (please refer to camera manual or device manufacturer for formatting procedures in the camera). If formatting in the camear did not work, we may try to format the card on the PC.
To format your card: Connect the card to your computer through a card reader, please right click on the removable drive associated to your card and select format. This will erase all data off the unit and correct errors from it; making the unit usable again. Before clicking on start make sure that the file system is on 'fat' and that the format options are all unchecked. Or, if the first format fails, please right click on my computer and Select Manage. When Computer Management comes up, please click on Disk Management on the left hand Side. After clicking on Disk Management, on the right side you will see a split window, look at the bottom half you will find Disk1, Disk 2, Disk 3.
One of them should say 'removable 'and show approximately the size of the card. Right click on the larger 'volume' rectangular icon to the right of the removable disk and select 'format' and Format the card, keeping the file type in 'FAT' and all format options are unchecked. If you do not have the format option please Select New Partition and just keep clicking next through the Wizard that appears.
After you have formatted the card please inform us if you are now able to use the device. Note: Please be advised that formatting will delete all your files. Please create a backup of your file if its still accessible. However, if its inaccessible, we apologize to inform you that Sandisk does not do file recovery.

Your Response: ( 07:20) Jennifer, I just tried the second formatting technique you described in your message. The 'Manage' utility is not recognizing the SD card at all.
When I tried to format it using the straight forward method, a pop-up window appears informing me that Windows Cannot Complete the Formatting. I had a colleague try the card on his camera. Error message. When he tried formatting the card on his computer he was unable to. Bottom line is, I'm 99.9% sure I have a bad SD card.

Is this where the serial number is traditionally located? Would it be adhered to the back of the card that way? I'm looking on my Sandisk Extreme III 2gb CF cards, and they don't appear to have a serial # on them any where. It does have Bxxxxxxxx Made in China stamped on those cards, and also the various patent numbers. My Kingston Ultimate II 2gb SD cards have the information stamped on the back to their cards.
Moving along, the card came in what appeared to be authentic packaging. The packaging included the plastic housing for the card, product warranty information and even a mini product catalog.
The SKU on the packaging reads SDSDH-2048-901 (top row) 6 9 6 and then -2948 (botton row) If this is indeed a fake card, they've managed to get their hands on what appears to be authentic Sandisk labels and packaging material. Everything down to the holographic-like label on the card itself looks like the real thing. Please advise. EDIT: Correspondence between myself and Sandisk continued beyond this point. It's the same for all my Sandisk cards (the 2gb of Extreme III CF, the 1Gb of UltraII SD, and the 2x1GB of Extreme III CF I sold you ). The fake ones will have something like this on the bottom instead of Bxxxxxxxx Made in China: Byte size: ZERO Content warning: NOT AN IMAGE I ended up contacting the seller I got the SD cards from on Pricegrabber.com. He said he'll give me a full refund and refund the shipping as well. I'm not dealing with Sandisk Tech Support any more. But he didn't give me anything beyond that in terms of how to get that done.
So I'm going to return the card to the retailer based on the previous exhange (where they told me 'this isn't a sandisk serial number' like they did with you) and just buy Lexar or whatever cards from now on. Frankly, I'm not all that impressed with Sandisk Tech Support. I would've rather sent them the card via mail and get a response like this rather than them passing judgement based on a few photos. To me they are an innocent party in this mess. Yeah, you're absoultely right. The blame can't be placed squarely on the shoulders of Sandisk. But these fake cards look damn real to my eyes, and this bootleg junk being solicited by would-be respectable retailers is getting out of control.
I just wish I didn't have to go through all that mess just to confirm or deny a fake card. Hell, I didn't even know it was fake until they asked me for the Serial #. Lesson learned here for sure. It's only a matter of time before the other major players like Lexar, Kingston, etc start experiencing the same problems with bootleg products carrying their name. I guess sticking to reliable retailers such as B&H is the key here. And I honestly can't say that I'm done dealing with Sandisk.
I've had a bad experience, and it wasn't even with an official Sandisk product. More than anything, I'm just pissed off about the situation in general. I got a refund back from the original seller, Sandisk Tech Support confirmed fakeness and all is right with the world.
